Ladies Headshot Happy Hour is the Self Care You Never Knew You Needed
A few years ago I had an idea about getting women together to get their headshots taken. It came to me after I took my own headshot, and realized how difficult it was to know what to wear, how to do my hair, and how weird it felt to take time for myself to do this. I thought about how much more comfortable I’d be if I were around women who felt the same way and we could just kinda go through it together. And given the serious anxiety I get from doing my hair & makeup under normal circumstances, I knew that that had to be apart of the experience. And, the best part of easing nerves a little and relaxing would be a couple sips of wine and some yummy snacks!
I immediately went to my friend of 15 years who is a hair & makeup artist to see if she’d be interested in trying something like this with me. From our very first event in March of 2016, the parties have been fun, engaging and (kind of surprisingly) — empowering. I couldn’t believe how consistently the women said how beautiful they felt, or that they didn’t even know they could look this good in a photo. And it makes a lot of sense — we are constantly being shown photos of ourselves online, often taken by cell phone cameras with poor lighting or angles; giving us a really skewed perception of the way we look.
What if we took control, and made sure our images reflected our most beautiful selves?
Flash forward to August of 2018 — we’ve had 65 women come to 15 events. We’ve been honored to get to know them from every ethnic background, ages ranging from late teens to early 70’s, and professions ranging from lawyer to student to educator to CEO to filmmakers and beyond. We’ve found the sweet spot to be about 6 attendees — enough to have hair and makeup going while someone is having photos taken, and the others can chat and snack and get to know each other. It lasts about 2 hours — some love to stay and chat after the photo session, some like to get in and get out. No pressure, no cookie cutter experience where everyone's photos look the same, just ease.
The final product(s) are more than headshots — in addition to a studio backdrop we can run around the neighborhood, my studio’s outdoor spaces, and get anything from dating profile sexiness to super power-posing CEO images and everything in between. We’ve tailored the packages to the needs we’ve seen come through the door: some women just need a quick shot for LinkedIn, some would love a gallery of images in a couple different outfits to use in a variety of ways. Some just want hair or makeup, some want it all.
I’ve been asked here and there why it’s a party for women only, and the answer is simple: I’m a woman and I know how to create space for them that’s safe and inviting in my own studio. The cool thing about the idea though, is that it’s totally mobile. If you’d like to have a party like this and want me and my hair and makeup artist to re-create this idea in your space, we’d be happy to do it! This can be tailored to any environment (personal or professional), so if your wheels are turning about bringing this to a community you are apart of, give me a call let’s get creative!
